I much prefer to be completely hands-on with the first team and leave my youth squads to the respective youth team managers. Some might prefer to do little at the beginning an then take a more active role as they become more familiar. Unlike my other Football Manager Guides, this one is based on both facts (information you can get from the game and from the SI Forums) as well as my own intuition.
